As well as marking findings on the 3D model, you can draw directly on an image. This is useful when the damage is clearer in a close-up than on the model surface.
Open an image first (see Working with images), then use the tools in the toolbar above the image.
Each tool is drawn with its own gesture:
| Tool | Gesture |
| Add Rectangle | Press and drag. Press where one corner goes, drag, release at the opposite corner. |
| Add Circle | Two clicks. First click sets the centre, second sets the edge. |
| Add Area | One click per corner, then finish. |
Whichever tool is active, a label follows your cursor with the next step. Follow it and you do not need to remember the table above.
A very small drag is ignored, so a stray click will not leave a tiny rectangle on your image. The tool stays ready, so you can draw again straight away.
The circle is created on that second click.
Use this for damage that is not a neat box: a spalled edge, an irregular stain.
Hovering the checkmark previews the closing edge, so you can see the finished outline before you commit.
An area needs at least three points. If you finish with fewer, the drawing is discarded.
Its details panel opens so you can set the class, severity and any fields your team uses. See Filling in an observation's details.
The observation is a draft observation until you click Add to project, and starting another one discards it. See Saving your observations.
To move the shape, resize it, or add and remove points afterwards, see Editing a shape.
Press Esc to abandon a drawing in progress, or click the active tool a second time to put it away.
| Reason | What to do |
| You do not have permission to create observations | Ask a project or workspace administrator. Viewers can see observations but not create them. |
| You are not in Inspect | Switch back using the mode picker in the header. |
